Courage

What do you want to be when you grow up?

September 7, 2021

And what’s stopping you?

Maybe nothing!

Maybe you’ve attained the status, goal, career, business, dream life you’ve always wanted!

If so, CONGRATULATIONS!! I’m celebrating with you!

But if not…

Why haven’t you done the things you’ve wanted to?

  • Have you tried and you “sucked at it”, so you’re done?

  • Have you given it up as a “foolish, childish” endeavor?

  • Did you trade it in for the safety and security of a steady paycheck?

Maybe you’re afraid of what people will say.

  • “But you went to school for FOUR years!”

  • “That’s a stupid idea!”

  • “Have you lost your mind?”

Or my personal favorite passive-aggressive response:

  • “You need to carefully consider the consequences of what you’re suggesting”… like you haven’t already considered the crap out of it before bringing it up!

Maybe the people in your life are super supportive, but your own mind is trash-talking you.

  • “You can’t do that!”?

  • “You know how you are!”

  • “You’re not the kind of person who…. {fill-in-the-blank-with-your-dream-job}!”

That’s how I was about being a business person, a public speaker, and a coach… all things I very much wanted to do but didn’t believe I could!

Until I believed I could.

That’s right.

Changing my life didn’t require that I change my life.

It required that I change my thoughts.

I tried changing many other things in my effort to be happy.

I’ve done every job from secretary to construction worker… to forklift driver to journeyman sawfiler to supervisor.

Hell, I’ve been MARRIED three times

I got rid of 90% of my belongings, moved to Chicago, and became a fricking tour guide… and I was still trying to find my perfect, meaningful, happy life. My purpose.

I couldn’t find it for two reasons:

  1. I didn’t know who I wanted to be when I grew up.

  2. Actually, number one is total bullshit… I knew what I wanted.

I was just terrified to articulate it, either to myself or others.

So, I pretended I had no idea and I tried to change everything else first.

I was afraid to feel disappointed if I didn’t make it happen.

Finally, at my bridal shower in 2015, I got brave and told everyone I was going to be a life coach.

They were so excited for me!

I was all signed up for coach school… and I quit before it started.

I’m a quitter… and a flake… and I give up easily… and wait… hold on… those are the thoughts I USED to have about myself!

I had to change those thoughts so I could finish life coach school.

Hell, I had to change those thoughts before I could even START life coach school.

And between 2015 and 2018… I did.

I did it by attending leadership courses and programs… I bought books, asked friends, watched YouTube, joined accountability groups… all the things, and slowly… I changed my thoughts enough to start… and finish my first coaching school in 2019!

WOOT!!

Do the crappy thoughts still come up sometimes?

Yes, absolutely.

But I know how to deal with them now.

And you can change your thoughts too.

And your life.

But, you’ve been doing it backward…. trying to change your life first, so you will feel better.

And what you actually need to do is change your thoughts, so you can feel better, then you can change your life.

I know… it sounds like I’m talking nonsense!

But stick around and you’ll see.

I’ll share more with you about looking at how you think about yourself and the world around you.

This is gonna be so fun!!
